Fitness to Fly – Important Patient Information

GP practices are unable to provide fitness-to-fly certificates. Assessing whether a patient is fit to fly is not part of NHS General Medical Services, and GPs are not trained or indemnified to make this decision.

The final decision on whether a passenger can travel always rests with the airline. Most airlines have medical advisors who assess passengers with medical conditions and may request medical information in advance.

If you have a medical condition that could affect your ability to fly, the airline may ask for details including:

  • The nature of your medical condition and its severity or stability

  • Any medication you are taking

  • Relevant information regarding mobility or assistance needs

This information is often provided using a MEDIF (Medical Information) form, which is supplied by the airline or travel agent, or available online. In some cases, clearance may also be given following direct communication with the airline’s medical team.

Your GP Practice can provide a medical summary upon request for you to share with the airline. However, your GP cannot give an opinion on your fitness to fly.

If further advice is required, please contact your airline directly or seek guidance from a private travel clinic.
